Unlocked is a platform to showcase how Microsoft’s products affect people’s lives…stories from the heart and soul of innovation. These stories live on the web and are led by long form copy with engaging multi-media touch points, which include; video, photography, animation, data visualization, spacial audio, etc, etc. From a production perspective, the challenge is implementing a production strategy to stretch the production budget while maintaining creative excellence. This required a creative/strategic approach to production and collaboration across our entire in-house studio network; video, digital, edit and graphics, and print. Our initial deliverables list totaled some 30 executions for the first 5 stories, with a production budget of only $300K. To optimize the budget we incorporated strategies such as;

  • Traveling Directors abroad, solo, and picking up all local crew and support staff

  • Hiring a local photographer from Kenya to fly to Ghanna for hero stills

  • Sourcing artists, animators, and data visualization coders through the web

  • Concurrently overseeing multiple remote productions
